I know, it's one of those stories you can barely fathom happening. It turned out the tank was extremely poorly built and the seems just weren't bonded adequately---obviously. His homeowner's insurance covered the carpet and subfloor but not much could be done regarding the tank and animals.
Many, many reefers rallied around this man and donated a new tank/stand, some equipment, rock, and frags when it was cycled and ready. It's also fortunate that his wife didn't go absolutely wild because many spouses would have. She understood and even encouraged him to start a new system (how cool is that)!
So, unfortunately sometimes bad stuff just happens...
