    Would it work over a 55 gallon tank, or will it not get enough coverage?

    Would it be able to cover all 48"? It would be a Hamilton pendant and ballast, btw.

    No. 24" is about the max for a MH. You may be able to squeeze a few more inches out of it, by raising it up, but then you will loose a lot more over the front and back too.

    Oh, okay. Thank you. I could buy it for $75, which is one heck of a deal, but I don't want to pay another $300 for a 2nd unit too.

    Get it and start a nano or a cube tank, but no it wouldn't work over a 55
