    To gain any added advantage from the rock in the bio ower then the tower needs to be above the water surface to allow the watere to bubble and splach its way down to exchange gases fro oxygen. You can use a good air pump &
    airstone under the chamber.. As for sump water depth I find aboutThat 4to5 does very well.

    Great input, Tangster...I've been hoping you'd weigh in...

    Perhaps I'll try to raise the rubble up a small piece of egg crate. I won't know about the final water level until I get to test it. But I'm glad to have the 4 to 5 inch guideline, as well as the method Matt mentioned earlier.

    Any advice on anti-siphon holes in the returns?

    I've done it by putting 1/8" hole below the waterline. It works.
    I also have used the technique of just having the top bit of the output of the return right above the waterline. You have to play around with it a bit to get it right so that it is not noisy or splashes too much, but it works too.
