I've found myself concerned about the same thing. I'm buying the BRS 150gal upgrade for my RODI system. It's basically a second RO membrane and the waste from the first goes into the second. Caveat is you have to maintain at least 65psi across both membranes, but I'm at 90 so I think I'll be ok. If not, I'll get a booster pump. But this method is supposed to cut your waste in half. My waste is about 1:3 so if I could cut that down to 1:1.5 then I'd be very happy.

My math was wrong. It will only cut it down by about a third. But still, that's one less gallon of waste for every gallon of RO I make.

Don't fall for the reduced waste claims with dual membrane systems, its not true. Think about it for a minute, you are sending concentrated brine into a second membrane then trying to reduce the waste even further. Do you think the membrane is going to last? Talk to RO vendors who have been around for decades and let them tell you why it isn't that easy. Don't you think if it were really that simple everyone would offer systems like that or that they would have been around decades ago? It's a farce.

I am not sure the drain/toilet water in CA is recycled. Why do they ask people to use less if the drain water is recycled? Water is cheap here still, IMO. Only a few bucks for 1000 gallons. I pay a lot more for 1 frag :)

Yes it is all recycled and in much of the state it is recharged back in the ground for storage and recovery or in some cases it becomes "reuse" water to irrigate golf courses, greenbelts and other uses. Some areas still treat it and return it to the sea if you are close to the ocean.
There is a cost associated with treated both the waste and the potable water as well as storage issues. We are not making any more water, what is here today is what was here 1,000,000 years ago, it is just not as shallow underground and requires more effort to get to it. There are also more people on the earth so what we have has to stretch further.
