Reading many posts and blogs and just about everything around the net gives me the conclusion that optimal tank health requires excellent "turbulence" in the main tank with a 3 times turnover to the sump and/or refugium.

Just wondering what others are doing with their systems?

    Thanks

It depends on the corals you keep. What are your plans?
For SPS tanks it's usually 40-60X in the display.. some go higher. That's a very general guide though a lot depends on the tanks layout and type of power heads.

Just trying to understand this Blue. Is that 40-60 times per hour turnover; return pump and powerheads in the display?

Yes. Pumps, etc are rated by gallons per hour (gph). In a 50g tank, 2500 gph (total from all pumps) would equal a turnover rate of 50x.

About what % of that should come from return?

Most run their sump around 5x the DT volume to allow their skimmer, reactors, etc to process the water more efficiently.

    Turnover Rate

Hello Mr. Bill. Hope your head has not been 'crushed' lately.

So having a main tank to sump turnover rate of 3x is not out to lunch.

Just want to make sure the skimmer has all the time it can get. Too much flow here would have skimmer lose efficiency. Never can tell when the skimmer does not have access to the nasties.

    Thanks

I ran mine at about 10X the sump volume to give the skimmer that dwell time. Higher rates can make it easier for microbubbles to get into the DT.
