MH vs HQI

    So the tank depth will be 18 inches , but my real question is one better than the other and why. thanks for all help.

    I believe HQI is a bit more intense - putting out more PAR.

    HQI is MH but MH isn't HQI. The best way to describe it is DE double ended bulb or SE Single ended bulbs. As far as PAR ones not really per say brighter than the other.
    The best link for MH i've ever seen. Real impartial scientific testing.

    so Covey which do you prefer. it will hold a variaty and the lights will be adjustable up and down 60x18x18

    Id go with 250 SE bulbs running on M80 HQI ballast personally. ;D

    I was looking at that yesterday Covey, but I couldn't manage to compare say a 250 halide to a 250 HQI halide from the same manufacturer. Did you have better luck?

    Not to steer the thread or anything but since we are on the subject... is there any report or finding that SE MH bulbs cause better shimmer than DE HQI bulbs?

    And... which is more beneficial, HQI DE or MH SE? Also, which is more beneficial in the long run, electronic ballast or magnetic?

    The brightest choice but it will cut your bulb life to 6-8 months. The PFO HQI ballast will drive some 250W Bulb over 370W!
