I just suspended my 760w MH light and right now it is sitting about 5 1/2 inches from the water surface. Does this sound like a good distance?

without a par meter there is no way of answering this, different bulbs produce different par, dependant upon the height of the particular bulb will change the par. certain corals need certain par values.

I set them to about 10 inches for more even lighting and at 5 or so the heat transfere will be far more and the picture is small but is that a glass cover on the tank ? If so remove it as soon as you can. Yesterday would have been my choice..
