I am no means an expert. However, my googling powers led me to believe they consume silicates in the tank and usually come after a diatom bloom. I had a diatom bloom just last week... Now I don't have noticeable diatoms and I have these little guys.

However, I'm open to more knowledge. :)

Scypha sponges are considered "cryptic" sponges, as they normally grow within filters, sumps, etc., altho they can be found in the open in DTs. They often bloom as a part of the cycling process, but are often around thruout the life of the tank.

They're filter feeders, and thus, help keep your water clear of suspended particulates.

It looks like I can also see a Dorvilleid worm between the two sponges in the last photo...cool stuff. They resemble bristleworms, they really aren't the same critter. Altho closely related to Eunicids (bobbit worms), but they are very small (< 1"), and can't harm your tank's inhabitants. In fact, they have been observed to use their jaws to cut pieces from the algae they feed on.

I had hundreds of them- Pinealpple sponges that is when my DT was not that established.

My dwarf Angels never touched them, they just sort of died out
