its prob a black sponge, ive heard something about black sponges are invasive and overgrow stuff, but i have some in my tank right in a colony of yello paly and it has not got any bigger or harmed the coral in any way.

but it def aint producing nitrates. so dont worry about it,

I also want to say its a sponge. I have the same in my tank. It grows around the LR and sometimes in a circular tube. Reef safe. Luna

I have quite a few of them. They have been spreading and getting bigger for whatever reason. Definitely a sponge.

    Welcome to 3reef,

You have what appears to be a bad case of Cyanobacteria. There are different types, therefore different colors.

I would start by evaluating your flow and increasing that if you need to, testing for phosphates and nitrates and lastly manually removing it.

If you need further assist consider starting a thread on your tank and the topic.

Wow, you have a lot going on there. My guess is the black is cyano. You also have bubble algae, plus some good size aiptasia. How long has the tank been running? What size tank, and what is your filtration? What are the parameters? What kind of water do you top-off with? What do you have for livestock?
