JBJ ATO Float Switch mod for sumpless set ups, quick and easy.

Since I do not have a sump and the float switch must dangle in the display tank, I wanted protection from rogue cleanup crew members.

I picked up a sheet of the material commonly used for DYI algae scrubbers at the local craft store. The squares on the sheet I used were 2/16 of an inch across, small enough to keep out all but the tiniest Ceriths!

Remove the float sensor from the bracket.

This is the size I went with and it worked out fine. The most time consuming part of the project was simply making the design and getting the box to the right size. I believe you could make it a wee bit smaller but you'll need smaller zip ties.

Putting together with 14" zip ties. ;D
I just used all the small ones I had set aside for this project recently when I was tightening up all the wiring in the stand.

Put the float sensor back in the bracket and cut a notch out of the top so everything lays flat.

    All buttoned up.

The top two nubs on the hanger need to be removed. (the other is pictured for reference)
A fine tooth saw will make short work of that and any unsupervised fleshy digits!

Thread 2, 3 or 4 zip ties horizontally thru the back...

eat your spinach and crank em' tight.

Marvel at your anti critter cube.

Now dangle this white beast in your beautiful display tank and wonder why you went sumpless!

Think I'll pick up a can BLACK Krylon Fusion when I go to the store to get some good small black zip ties. I think it'll blend in pretty good then.

I'll update with a few pics after I "black it out". 8)

awesome man! i used to be in the same situation, i just used the mesh from an old fish net and pulled it tight across all the sides... i really like this though! its a wonder they dont manufacture it with an optional shield like this

    Thank you folks.

I switched on the moonlights for the morning inspection and the white from this is brilliant and distracting, I may have to subdue it with Krylon tonight...

Very nice. If I were you, rather than the krylon fusion, I would scuff-sand the plastic and let some nice purple algae grow on it.

Looks cool though... got me thinking I need an ATO for my sump system.
