I made a mistake and put carbon in the filter sock a couple weeks ago. If you havent tried this done, the constant pounding of the water grinds the carbon up until it is dust which then settles everywhere in the tank.

I still needed to run carbon on the tank so I started trying to figure out how other people did it. Buying a filter didnt seem like the most fun idea and I didnt have anywhere in the sump that alot of water would be forced through the carbon instead of around it.

This is the ghetto carbon chamber i came up with using a plastic Diet Mnt Dew bottle, a small power head and a 1 inch piece of tube.

First drink the Diet Mnt Dew. Now that the easy part is done rip the lable off the outside to make it easier to see how dirty the carbon is getting later on.

Then cut a series of slits along the bottom of the bottle. I found that a really sharp serrated knife worked best for me.

After you have cut all slits all the way around the bottle put it aside for a minute and work on the cap. I used a dremel tool to cut a hole in the cap the just big enough to squeeze the square to round adapter that came with my power head through. I also cut a small piece of tubing to hold the adapter to the cap.

This is how the cap ends up getting assembled.

After you have this assembled just fill the bottle with your favorite carbon or phosphate chem or whatever. I used a bit of floss to keep the carbon dust in the bottle at the end and a bit at the top after I filled the bottle with carbon to keep the carbon from settling in the bottle when it is mounted in the sump sideways.

This is my mounted ghetto carbon chamber.

    Thanks.

I was thinking that for changing the carbon I'm just going to throw away the bottle and make a new one. It only takes a couple minutes and has got to be easier than getting the carbon out of the bottle.
