could i have your input on this,
if i build a stand for a bow front tank with a top that matchs the profile of the tank, would i get away with having a square stand.the over hang would be 5 1/2 inchs???

I wouldnt do it, especially if you are talking about a bigger tank. You might be able to get away with it with a smaller tank, but I wouldnt chance it.

You would want the top centered on the stand, not just over the front like in the drawing

The top of the stand will need to fully support the trim line of the tank.
The easiest way I could think of doing it, would be to take your top piece (square), center the tank on it, then trace around the tank. Then you could use a jigsaw or bandsaw to cut the top to shape.

That's crucial. However you want to accomplish this, that's fine. Just make sure you adhere to this rule.

A square base would be fine as long as 100% of the tank is supported. You can have nothing sticking over the edge. Just imagine an avalanche. Unsupported weight just poised for disaster.
