I have a type of algae growing on my eggcrate in my frag tank. I have very low nutrients, yet it continues to thrive. It can be blown off easily with a turkey baster. It can be scratched off. None of my CuC will touch it. I have Nerites, Turbos, Ceriths, and Trochus snails...and a few blue leg hermits. It grows on a few plugs as well, and any and all rubble pieces I have frags mounted to. I dose Vodka, BRS 2 Part Ca/Alk, and amino acids daily. I feed heavy, but params are better than most. SPS has full color.

    Description:
Light brown color, slimy appearance. Easily removed. NO air bubbles present. INSANELY fast grower.

    Genocide Attempts:
I have removed all eggcrate, scrubbed, rinsed (with RODI), blown off with an air compressor until the appearance is brand new, with no visible sign of algae, and yet it returns by the following day.

    Params:

    SG: 1.026
    pH: 8.25 (Pinpoint)
    Temp: 78.5
    NO3: Undetectable (Salifert)
    PO4: Undetectable (Hanna)
    Alk: 9
    Ca: 450
    Mg: 1380

I don't have an ID for you but I have read that eggcrate can leech phosphates. Is the egg crate new? Just wondering if this could be fueling the algae.

    Next question...questions:

What is the procedure for removing silicates? I currently have Silica-Buster DI Resin for my RO/DI unit. Could I get a single reactor, and put in DI resin to remove it directly from my tank? What other minerals would DI remove? Is this not a feasible option?

Member Blackraven had a frustrating episode of it, and he had a ULNS I believe.

From what I have seen and read over the years it just needs to run it's course, when what ever is fueling it fades it will as well.

You can transfer it from one system to the next, so a heads up.

I think GFO also will remove silicates. But until the eggcrate stops leeching I think it will remain.

He's gone now...I bought his Vortechs. I wonder if that is where the algae came from. Thanks.
