having more than one clown is like having more than one tang, or angelfish, or any type of fish, it is easily done its just the unlucky few that have had agressive clowns. just if you ad another clown if there is signs of agression re- arrange the rocks a little to mix up the territories or just leave the lights o for a day and that should mix things up enough so they both are developing new territories at the same time.

I wouldn't get the maroon clown as they get big and mean. I had one that terrorized the other fish so I got rid of it. Then got a sm b&W o. clown (who was a bit of a meanie, but too small to be to bad)and a month later a 2nd larger one(who is more laid back) they are fine with thier tankmates and pretty much stay in thier spot in the tank.
...oh and the little meanie had his fins clipped so to speack by the larger laid back female (hehehehe).
My single reg o. clown in my 46 swims all over the tank and is more personable and takes food from my fingers.

To clarify my 2 b&w o. clowns did start off in a 10gal nano then went to a 20T and are now in a 29gal tank (last upgrade for that tank).

ime i have never had a maroon clown pick on any of my fish, usually they are the one vulnerable to being picked on not vice versa

Yes, you can still pair. The longer you wait though, the tougher it is, due to territorial aggression.

I've know many maroons and they are notoriously aggressive. Yours is the exception, not the rule. Also, guessing, you don't have a 14g? I will say, I have found once they have established an anemone, they tend to leave other fish alone, as long as the other fish stay away from their nem. However, other clowns in a small tank with them is a very, very bad idea....

actually aside from my 90 gallon i have a 16 gallon with a maroon with my carpet and a percula with a bta. they get along fine. i believe it is vice versa, the agressive maroons, are the exception to the rule

So just because you have had luck that makes everyone including LiveAquaria wrong? Seriously, Maroon clowns get to 6" are very aggressive, and not suitable for a nano tank.

Like I said, I have the option to move either fish if they become too big. Didn't mean to start such a debate 8)

I am going to go ahead and forget about the maroon (although at that size and it's particular patterns it is truly a cool looking fish). Seems like the majority see a problem with it in such a small tank. That is pretty much why I asked because in a 100-300gal+ tank I wouldn't have given it any thought as I have had several different clowns together with zero problems.

Anyway, going to throw in a Firefish or Royal Gramma (both under 1 1/2 inches). My wife fell in love with the Gramma when I showed her a pic.

Thanks again everyone for your thoughts. Probably saved me a minor headache.

Cool, I've had both and are awesome fish. The gramma likes to roam through the rocks a lot though. So, it will do best with a lot of rockwork. The firefish, will do better in a smaller tank, as long as there are no aggressive, or large fish. It is extremely timid. If it gets along with its tankmates though, you will probably see it out more than the rg. You didn't mention keeping both, but just a note of caution keeping both a royal gramma and a firefish together, they tend to get into territorial disputes. I actually had the two together for over 7 years without issue, but that was in a 55g (latter upgraded to 75).

Also, found this article on clowns if anyone wants to know more, it seems pretty dead on and has tons of info!

i am not meaning to be harsh that is just in my experience and everyone i know. it takes forever to get a maroon clown that big and most dont even get that big anyways. you rarely see a two foot angelfish in an aquarium because most just dont get that big, they can though.
