I read where yellow tangs need 70 + gallons, you think one would do well in my 55 gallon?

I have some larger swim my fish in my 55, including a pair of butterflyfish but I'm sure most will say no. I say you're okay though.

You answered your own question. Will it do well, debatable general consesus would say no. What are your other tank mates? In terms of capacity, 1 large very active aggressive fish like a yellow tang in a narrow tank like yours will limit who else is allowed in.

There are plenty of other fish that are perfectly suitable for a 55 gallon. Stocking suggestions are always the "bare" minimum. so they say your tank should be 48x 18 x 18 for it to be housed happily. Yes as you say can be done in a smaller setting but not happily, we are creating homes for fish, not for our amusement. JM2C

It might be trouble in the long run, but you can if you want.

Right now I have a Percula Clown, and one yellow tail damsel, which I'll be getting rid of tomorrow. I just want some color in the tank, but I do want to provide a nice home to the fish as well.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Are you prepared to deal with marine ich?

How long has the tank been running?

Do some window shopping on Liveaquaria.com is you are not set on the yellow tang.

Many butterflyfish will be on the larger more colorful side and do well in a 55.
