I agree with the algae, thats all mine eats when i watch him. i think you wouldn't have any problem keeping it in a 55. One thing i found out is to leave alot of room in the front of the tank where they can swim back and forth so they can burn off all that algae they eat ;D

They eat GHA, for sure. Mine did a great job of lowering the levels in my tank to nearly 0. Don't worry so much about the algae, though; make sure there's a whole lot of crud sitting on the rocks and sand in the tank. They're primarily detritovores. Detritus is their thing. I haven't seen mine go after algae nearly as much as most tangs, not even the gracilaria or red grape kelp. He goes around and picks off of the areas of my rock that crud settles into about 80% of the time. The rest of the time he eats algae off the side panels of the tank (I don't scrape the sides or back).

I think I've read the tank should be close to 6 months old for a tang, so that the live rock is really 'dirty.' But I'm not sure.

I haven't gotten mine to eat anything other than the occasional mysis that he grabs. He doesn't really need to, though. He's a fast-metabolism, fast-moving, always-eating fish. Like, from the time the lights turn on until they turn off, he eats constantly. They grab one or two bites off the rock, hide back behind it, come out again, pick for a couple seconds, repeat.

I don't know how well they would fare with just feedings, unless they were many times a day like with anthias.

I added my tangs 4 months into it. 6 months is good though.

Yeah, it's especially so for the bristletooth tangs though, the group of tangs Koles belong to. Other tangs don't eat as much detritus as the bristletooth ones do.
