OK, so we have this xenia, not sure what kind but the color is almost lavender and it's really pretty. When it started out it looked like someone had cut an existing piece off the rock and left a spot behind, the LR around it is weird too, like it's white when the rest of the rock is nice and purple. So anyway, it grew to about 3 or 4 inches tall when it was fully extended with lots of polyps and then it split into two equal pieces. The split was completed yesterday and the fingers now open and close independently of each other (Which I guess means that it's finally two independent organisms).

Now for the question! Is it normal for it to shorten up when it splits? It's not reaching nearly as high as it was, it's like the stalk that was about 2 inches long is about 1/2 an inch now. It's still pulsing most of the time when the lights are on, and the color is good, but I was just wondering if the fact that it's shorter is a sign that something is missing from the water.

I do know that Calcium is good, and water parameters are all normal, but I don't have a test kit yet for Mg or Iodine.

Thanks, once again for answering my neurotic questions:stars:

I'm off to bed, way later than I should be!

it should be fine. xenia is a weird coral like that. Maybe missionsix will chime in as he seems to be the xenia master.

OK, so I answered my own question. It didn't like the water flow! We had a dead spot that kept accumulating some bubble algae so we tried playing with the flow to get rid of it (the dead spot, not the algae). Anyway, It was getting too much direct flow do I put the pumps back where they were and it's standing tall again.

The way my xenia has grown, has caused it to grow into some pretty high flow. I haven't noticed anything bad from it. They will tend to grow in the direction of flow. Keep an eye on it. If it starts to grow towards other corals, I'd start thinking about preventative measures. If you've already seen it split once, you'll be amazed at how fast it can start to take over. Sounds like healthy splitting xenia to me.

    Amen!
The silver xenia I have has blown my mind on how fast it grows I even gave a stalk of it to a buddy about 6 weeks ago and now he has 4 stalks of it, blue xenia seems to grow ALOT slower but still grows faster than all my other corals with the exception of the GSP
