We have added two six line Wrasse to our reef group and love to watch them move around. They can get through the smallest holes in the live rock. The only problem has been some territorial YTB Damsels but not to much.

Question, I knew they covered themselves with a film when they sleep to "keep their smell from predator", what do you do with the gel they leave in the tank? I doubt it will hurt anything but does it go away by itself, get reused, what? I have been picking it out the next day but it is not an easy task.

    Thanks All

I have heard that the wrasses do not get along with their own kind. Maybe I'm wrong. The hermits should eat the slime sleeping coat from the wrasses.

I've just left it in, I've seen it sometimes, but others times don't. I don't think my sixline does it every night. He uses a hollowed out rock as a home. I haven't seen an negative effects yet

Thanks guys, I guess I will just leave it in. It will be interesting to see if the hermit crabs eat it especially if it is supposed fend off predators.

The two 6 lines that we have get along great and share a roomy cave with extension rooms.

i agree, nothing to worry about. my fairy wrasse did the same thing, but usually in the morning it would be gone.

btw any chance of getting the sex of your wrasses? maybe babys in the future? i dont know if ive ever heard of wrasses breeding in captivity.

Well, other than one is large than the other I am not sure how you sex them? The spots on the tail fins are a bit different. They do get side by side and quiver the dorsal fins which I assume is some sort of acknowledgement. Other than that they hang out together. How would I tell the sex?

If you can see things like their slime coat laying around, you dont have enough flow. Just my opinion...

Actually the mucus is not lying around. I can see the film stuck to the rock in the cave they inhabit. I have to go in with a thin stainless hook to get it. The tank is 85 gallon and has a Mag 7 return at full blast and a Koralia 3 and a return from the external filter so the flow is moving pretty good. The soft corals seem to like it.

I will try some other forums to see if I can learn how to sex them. Perhaps someone else reading this thread knows how to sex a 6 line Wrasse.
