I was searching in the DIY forum and couldnt find a thread that had a actual tank build in there. Is that a task that shouldn't be done or hasn't been?

Its doable, but most people dont have the time/space/proper tools to do so. Its just cheaper to purchase one.

its not really cost effective to build a tank when companies and produce them so fast and relatively cheap....i have seen people build plywood tanks, but not too many.

Plywood tanks are very cost effective.... kinda. The bigger the tank, the more cost effective. There have been several members on here that have made one.

I have actually put a lot of thought into making one. When I get in my final home, I will build a very large plywood tank.

My 34g acrylic tank is a DIY. But as the others have stated, it is more cost effective buying a professionally built tank. I did save quite a bit of money building it. But, once I factored in the time I spent to research, prep, and then build the tank, it would of been more cost effective to buy one. The satisfaction of building the tank was far greater than any tank I purchased. However, I was definitely sweating bullets when I water tested it :p

The main reason I built this tank was I could not find a tank with the dimensions I wanted (24" x 18" X 18"). If you want a standard sized aquarium, I think it is quite a bit cheaper to buy one. Certain retail chains offer a $1 per gallon sale from time to time.
