I finally found out what kept my feather duster in hiding, it was a foxface that i bought at the same time as the feather duster. I had just rid myself of aggressive fish so that I would never have the problems I had with them, only to have this (supposedly) reef-safe fish ruin it again:angry:. He has managed to tear the crown off of the worm and I haven't seen the worm since. I've heard feather dusters grow the crown back, but I think the fox-face is still messing with the worm. Will the fox-face stop or do I have to get rid of it? and is there a possibility that the feather duster could die from stress caused by the foxface?

    Hey Triggerfish

there is a possibility that the duster could starve as a result of not being able to extend its feathers in order to catch food
if it loses its crown, it can grow a new one, but it will have fasted to a degree whilst awaiting the new growth , its new feathers will be stumpy to start with and thus not a very effective fishing net
if its being pestered everytime it opens, its fishing time will be sacrifised and thus may eventually pass away

    Thanks steve,
That is what I was fearing, do you think I should get rid of the foxface? Also, I've heard of many people with both living peacefully in their tank, am I this unlucky?

Sometimes feather dusters will pop there crown when stressed I have seen it before. Are you sure the fish did it and it did not just get stressed? Doesent seem right for a fox face to do that. I have seen more strange things though.

I'm sure the foxface caused it, but the feather duster probably released it on its own.

you could just be unlucky and its possible that its a one off instance, investigation, found nothing edible and wont bother with it again
I have seen many fox faces in various reef set ups

but you may ultimately need to make a desicion as some fish are exceptions to general rules

You are very un-lucky. Foxfaces are usually very good in a reef tank. I have however heard of several that ended up eating LPS corals.

It's only been a day since the feather duster lost its crown, but I haven't seen what's left of it. I really like the foxface, it's got really nice colors, but if it went after the feather duster It might go after something else later. What would you guys do?

I don't have a refugium yet, but I really like the look of feather dusters, does anyone else think I should still keep the foxface?
