The difference is a private store typically was started by a hobbiest that wanted to turn his hobby into a business. So theoretically they should have a lot of experience and knowledge. A Petco store was started by a remote corporation. Someone with a business degree and probably loves cats runs the store. Then they higher the most qualified person who applies to manage fish section, as selected by the cat lover.

    Are there Petco franchises?

    no

There are exceptions, some stores aquatic departments are run by caring knowledgeable people. However, it is a corporate chain and the dominant mentality is set by corporate headquarters. My experience with petco has been that more often are generally run by kids with no training or knowledge, who have no business selling rare aquatic livestock. Their tanks are poorly maintained and they have absolutely 0 inclination to try to ensure livestock they sell has a chance at survive. In the big picture, exceptions aside, they are the epitome of why people like snorkel bob get so much attention. Certainly there are LFSs that are as bad, or worse, however, they are not a big chains and need to be considered on a case, by case basis. I think LFSs certainly get their share of criticism though nevertheless....

I have used Petco for supplies and get most of my dog food there.

Do I have a beef with them selling livestock? The answer is an unequivocal yes. While there are some that I've been in that have "decent" salt water sections, the vast majority do not. By having a salt section they are encouraging their customers to get into saltwater, but do not back up that encouragement with the appropriate level of knowledge. As such, uninformed people will try to get into the hobby and many/most will ultimately fail. This hurts the hobby as the whole.

Are there LFS that can cause the same scenario? Absolutely. The difference? They are not on every corner (hyperbole). The level of access to poor knowledge is significantly higher due to Petco so they play a proportionally more substantial role in failed hobbyists.

im just mad that petco sells maxi-jets for $59.99! When one breaks, instead of running to the petco around the corner, I have to go a half hour to pick one up for $20.

I think that saltwater fish are precious recourses like said above^. And if you can't give them 100%, you shouldnt keep them. I think that for the most part, petco doesn't have any business keeping them.

For my part on that...I am not a hater of petco...I have bought dry goods there.....Just not SW fish..they have no business selling lilvestock...but as with PetsMart...more power to them if they want to sell the supplies. Petco just needs to see the error of thier way on this and move away from the SW fish sales....in my opinion.
