I'm not saying that we shouldn't be collecting from the wild and there are certainly some species that we cannot get elsewhere. I also don't have a problem with them gaining money from the industry on those items. To say that we need to take a moral stance against either side as a lumped together intity is what I don't agree with.

You can't say publicly that you are against aquaculture and will never use it and then expect people to read far enough into it later to realize you meant a small group that does aquaculture wrong.

Is it? I'm going to try to get a statement from them on it. Maybe we can clear this up, get a better statement on there site and put all of this to rest.

I'm somewhat surprised at the tone of the PAF web site. Whatever their intended use if the word "aquaculture," their "just say no" attitude to aquaculture in general is poor authoring in the least and dramatically irresponsible to most people who would read their page.

The bottom line is that there is no one method for getting corals into the market. Aquaculture is not only viable, but highly responsible. Mariculture is likewise. Collecting is a way for new colonies to come onto the market. Right now we need all three.

Saying aquaculture is immoral is hyperbole at the extreme. It us the equivalent of saying salmon farming is immoral. Really?

Mike, the bottom line is that despite the title of you story, PAF is not against aquaculture. That is a straight out misconception of their statement.

They may not be, but their statement says they are.

Possibly not, but it would be the best way to clear this up if it's a misunderstanding.

As someone who has spoken with the powers at be in PAF for a decade on this issue, what I said is what they have been saying for years. If you think Dave is the enemy, you are sadly mistaken. Dave has done a lot for the trade in numerous areas. The piece was extremely poorly written and i am not one to speak as I have written some horrible posts that in hindsight I wish I spent more time on them. Things happen and this was just released. Rather than making such a big stink I would suggest acting like a respectable media outlet and try to get both sides of the story rather then shooting from the hip :) Dave is been open to talking in the past, but you may have now been written off for contacting him after you blasted him.

Are you aware of PAF's Solomon Island station? Do you know who that supplies? How about when PAF was the only stateside supplier of WSI maricultured corals?

Guess my decade plus long push for a sustainable industry paid off in this case :D

I've seen a lot come and go, but I'm still here and still fighting.
