I think that mentoring would be a great thing if the mentor and novice lived near each other and could actually look at each others tanks and discuss things in person etc.

3REEF is an internet forum with experts/gurus/sages (delete as appropriate;D) from all over the world with a vast wealth of experience. It would seem foolish to ignore most of the knowledge base by only talking to one person.

Also, there are so many different things that can go wrong in this hobby that no one is going to have experienced all of them (hopefully:-/) but between everyone the solution to any prob should be out there somewhere.

Of course i did not mean to listen to just one and only one and naturally not "1" person can claim to know it all of course.
And theres a whole lot of dynamics to this, what works for one may not work for the other .
Size tank , what one or the has to spend, etc.

Not to mention, what happens when the "student" doesnt come to class? I havent seen Trucker for days, so I dont even know if everythings ok with him. I think that the idea is great, but theres alot of room for error and like has been stated below, theres really not one person that knows it all and everyone isnt going to have the same exp. or eco-system. The idea was brought up about ppl who live close to each other. Thats a step in the right direction. I see this "mentoring" idea like trying to find one's soul mate in life. There has to be some similarities in both, the set up and living near each other. Just my 2 cents. Luna

This would be great, if you lived near each other, as previously stated. Hey wait, Botie lives near me........

Bogie makes a good point here. The mentor you hook up with may or may not have the proper set-up to mentor your tank.

Additionally I'd like to add that mentoring through PM's might not be such a good idea because then the forum as a whole does not benefit from vital knowledge shared. I can't even count the number of times I clicked on a thread and learned something that changed my whole outlook, or perspective. I think we are on a fine line here between one-on-one mentoring as a positive and dilution of the forum's knowledge base as a negative.

    My thoughts were >
1, mentor/teacher/goto guy/s would be availible to a person/s that "they" trust and have simalar set up's etc. ( and of course personality traits and what you / they have as a budgit matters a whole lot.
2, naturally a mentor having a 300 gallon full blown reef with stony's / clams/etc. would probably not have the delicate touch ( or even want to )
take some one under the wing that has a 5 gallon nano tank.
3,It was for any one wishing to throw their hat in and say hey' """ i'll im availible to help a lady/fellow on a regular basis ( that seems very successfull with their tanks. )
4, It can have a positve here as to a friendship / learning from a successfull reef keeper and would help from having to ansewer the same question over and over again.
5, And maybe the beginner / novice would like to have a goto guy/gal that they felt like they could depend on and be successfull if they could have the mentor's undivided attention.
6, the visitor might be so inclined to be a member and take an active roll in post's, site, etc. ( thereby increasing total number of down right fabalous reef keeprs )
7, it's a friendly jesture to say hey I'm here i'm fairly successfull with my reef,
if you'd like the undivided attention, i'm ( mentor ) willing to be there for you
    in every facet .

Ummm Simply wonderful idea :) But isn't what you describe exactly what 3reef already is?

I agree with John. When I discovered 3reef, I had already been experienced in salt water. My personality has me wanting to learn more and more and more. I selectively chose my mentors(whether they liked it or, not) and have become friends(if you will and, I think I will) with a few of them.Sending them pm's with certain questions and getting alot of help. Would I like to help someone on a closer personal basis? Absolutely. But, with helping someone via pm is defeating the purpose of 3REEF. I am learning this hobby by day and still have alot to learn. I will always try to share my personal experience with anyone and everyone willing to care or, pay attention. I'm open to helping someone if I know the answers. Why help one or, two people when you have the potential to help hundreds and maybe thousands.
