Ok, Just sick of paying $170 a month for cable/internet when we maybe watch 10 channels and a few hours a day. So I'm gonna ditch it.

Plan is to get Hulu+ and netflix streaming. Good thing is, if I keep my internet with my cable provider I get 50 channnels for free, of which 10 are HD.

My living I'll use my PS3, but for my room, will I watch most TV late at night, what would you rec?

I am an Apple guy, so AppleTV seems like a no brainer, but ROKU seems to have more options.

But more people seem to have ROKU.

But TIVO has a DVR already installed.

Has anyone else done this, and what has worked/hasnt worked?

    THANKS

You could try just an HD Antenna for your room, depending on what you watch late night. Let me know how it goes because i too want to get rid of cable.

Roku has always had the upper hand on content and price. I personally am not a fan of apple so it would be an easy decision for me to go with Roku. But personal opinions aside apple tv, which started out with pretty limited streaming options, has made some great progress. Being an apple fan you will enjoy the easy content portability between devices and seamless streaming of music, photos, videos, etc... via airplay.

BAsicly if you are an apple fan with apple devices then apple tv is the obvious choice. If not get Roku LT!

Cosmo....... You know my answer will be AppleTV.

I have been doing this for the past two years, in fact I stream up to 400gb per month in just TV alone. I use my PS3 for Netflix, Hulu+ and Amazon Prime in my living room.

In the bedroom I have a Sony Blu-Ray player with a AppleTV. I have been very pleased with the AppleTVs performance and UI. I did at one point in time own a Roku box, I don't believe in bashing the competition but it was returned in days.

Awesome Chris, can you get ESPN on the appletv? Also, is it hulu+ and netflix friendly?(read a few sites that says it isn't). 1 more?, how do you watch live TV?

The AppleTV Gen3 (Current) WILL support Netflix in 1080P and Hulu+. The AppleTV can do some basic sports but not ESPN, if you own an iPad 2 or greater (or iPhone 4S) you can do AirPlay Mirroring. If theres an App out there that has ESPN you can wirelessly send it over to your TV to view.

I have Comcast so it costs less to have "Local channels" with my internet (59.99 vs 89.99). If I really want to watch local TV I can but I never do.

Dropped my satellite provider like a hot potatoe 1 month ago for same said reasons.500+ channels, watched maybe 5/6 of them, then getting raked over the coals every month when the bill comes in.

I bought 2 cheapy best buy wifi blueray players for my 2 lcd hd tv's,so between the 2 bluray's,my sons xbox, his ipod and our 2 laptops,we stream Netflix and CinemaNow for around $20 a month and love it,we have it in every room and wifi anywhere in my yard, plus get to watch what I want, when I want with no commercials is priceless ;).

We are officially cable/satellite and contract free!
