All sumps are for are increased water volume and a place to hide equipment. They do not add enough water volume to really make a difference unless you're like ardo and have a 50g tank with like 300g's between your sump/refugium/remote sandbed etc etc etc. Ive never ran a sump and have never had a problem with parameters.

However I am about to run one on a tank just so I can house a big arse skimmer I got from ardo, haha.

Refugiums are about useless IMO. If you know anything about horticulture, a little bit of fertilizer goes a long long way. Fish fertilizer goes even longer which is why the indians used it. If your macroalgae grows a lot in your refugium, that means you you have high nitrates/phosphates and its reproducing to keep up with it. When people thin theirs out and sell it, thats just defeating the purpose. Why not find whats creating the reason why you wanted the macroalgae and correct it? If you are using for to increase o2, thats what a lot of flow is for. Increased surface agitation increases the gas exchange, releasing co2 and introducing o2 to the tank.

We had one of our tenants stop by and do a top off each day. We purchased several one gallon containers, with lids, and filled them with RO/DI water. We set them in front of the tanks and each day we had her drop a gallon in the the 72, 55, and the (2) 29's. We also purchased several daily medication reminder containers and put enough in the daily slots to feed each of the tanks. We set the containers on each of the tanks. We also had her check the skimmers and showed her how to empty them if necessary.

I would say top-offs only thing to be concerned with. Along with an emergency action plan if something really abnormal occurs, like power outage, etc. (Someone to call?)
