50 cents is pretty good for RO/DI, RO only is usually 25 cents or more and distilled is like 89 cents at the grocery.

50 cents is fair. That is what I used to pay at my LFS, one in my area is 75 cents a gallon.

Ultimately I ended up buying an RO/DI unit. I'm not sure how much I save by making my own water, but I know I save a lot of money by not going to the LFS every week. ;D

Making your own RO/DI usually works out to less that 5 cents per gallon including water and sewer rates, tariffs and taxes and replacement filter costs. It does not take long to pay for a RO/DI system at $145 if you make much water at all. You can also use the RO/DI for RO drinking watre and replace all those plastic bottles we all buy and pay for itself much quicker, thats how I justified my first RO/DI system and it was paid for in less than 6 months.

Could talk your folks into buying one with a spigot for drinking water at the sink. Then you'd have RO for drinking, cooking, etc. & you could use the DI for the tank.

You could also just get one that hooks up to the faucet, and remove it when you aren't using it. It's not like they have to be permanently installed or anything like that.
