I had mine on pre cycle ...

I may be wrong in doing that ... but it was skimming off all kinds of garbage with nothing but live rock and a clean up crew

based on that ... I would recommend immediately.

I would just say as soon as you can. We started our tank last November and started the cycle without a skimmer. It's not so much an "urgency" at first. Best I remember, we added it within a few weeks.

Try to start saving now and buy one as soon as you can, no rush. A skimmer should be one of the first things on your list other than salt.

    Get tank and stand
    Get sand and rock
    Get a good water source
    Get salt
    Get skimmer
    Get test kits
    Get fish
    Get coral

A skimmer is one of the most important pieces of equipment you can add to your tank. Although, I do know some locals who keep FOWLR systems w/o a skimmer for years and doing well as long as they stay on top of their water changes i.e. 20% per month. I also keep two of my systems w/o a skimmer and they're doing very well but I guess that is because my bio load is minimal.
If you're planning on a lot of fish and/or coral, you should get one urgently.

I started my skimmer after a month of cycling. That prevented the stuff that starts the cycle from getting skimmed out.
