The question, for those it applies to, is how long did you have your first tank before you upgraded to a larger "big" tank? I know we've had people make the hop from 55's to 150+ gallon tanks, and then we've had some smaller jumps as well. So how long did you have your very first tank before you upgraded to a larger tank?

Any stories about why you chose to upgrade when you did?

And note, I did make the poll public so people will know who voted and what they voted for. I mean, this isn't exactly a top secret confidential question now, is it? :p

I started with a 55 and upgraded when my wife bought a 200 as a wedding gift. Which makes it very hard for me to ever get rid of it. (like that would ever happen) The tank was listed in a local newspaper as a 400 gal tank and stand for $200. We went to look at it and it of course didn't look big enough to be 400 and I tried to get the price lower, he would not budge on the price even when I showed it was only 200 gal. Still a good price for the whole thing. Of course now I have many many more $$$'s involved but it is very relaxing to watch. Oh yeah the 55 is now the sump

I have had freshwater tanks for many years. But about 10 or so months ago I upgraded to a 90 gallon for my angelfish. Then about 8 months ago a wanted to try saltwater. So I bought a 55 gallon for the salt and I gave it a try. After I had the 55 for a couple months my LFS talked me into an aneneme which died due to a faulty powerhead falling on it and blasting it to death. So I took down the 55 and cleaned the heck out of it. As I was setting it back up I thought how cool it would be to make my 90 salt. So I just switched the tanks so my 55 is fresh and my 90 is salt.

When I get my own house I would like to get a longer tank. My 90 is cool and all, but it stinks for lighting and I would love to get a aquiles tang.

I had my 30 gallon for about 6 months. It was much too small for me, I like to go big. Moving was a convenient time to upgrade as I had to tear down anyhow.

My 75 is doing well but I see a 180 in the near future.

Well I started with a 10gal brackish tank. I had a figure 8 puffer and a green spot puffer. I had that for about a year then read about saltwater. Converted my brackish to saltwater and then after about 8 months I upgraded to my Biocube 29.

I started eons ago (lol) with my 35g as a FO tank.

I went to Fiji w/ my SO, and got certified as a diver in Fiji, and right after the Fiji trip I started my 35g up as a reef tank after it was sitting empty a couple years. That reef tank was lit by 3x39w of t5ho retrofit, one of the first t5 only lit tanks around in the states at the time, and had that running from 2003- like 2008.

Seeing that we rented the house we had when the 35g was a reef, I found a barely used 90g RR setup, and collected equipment to get that running as a reef after we bought our own house.

Immediately as soon as we closed on the house about a year ago, I got the 90g going in a remote corner of the house so it would not interfere with any big tanks I would set up. That 90g was up for just over a year as a reef.

Well, I was planning on buying a very nice barely used custom stand, canopy and 180g RR tank, that deal never materialized, so I built my own.

I made my own 193g (easier to call it a 200g) after about 3 months of reading, planning and building, I set my big tank up in the wall behind the bar. So now that 90g RR setup is for sale.

It all sounds so easy now. LOL

When I started I did the 55 gallon thing with ciclids. I had this tank for years. I then moved in to a new apartment and my landlord saw my tank and said he had a 180 that he would give me as it was collecting dust in the garage. I still did fresh water but had a mamoth red tail catfish in that tank. When I bought my house 3 years ago I said I was going to put an addition on it as it was a 1 bedroom I designed the addition around that fact I was going to have a kick butt salt water tank. I then bought a pet store going out of buisness and ordered my 220 and installed it acording to the addition and space alloted. My wife made the mistake of saying you get me a flat screen for our bedroom you can get any tank you want haha. I hung the 60in plasma on the wall and built the 220 under it in the bed room. That is my story.
