I brought this home yesterday- it's obviously didn't look like this. It's a green finger leather, was tall and green in the store. Now, this am, it looks like this. I've had a frogspawn with what I thought was brown jelly this week, freshwater dipped but it died yesterday (it stunk, so I assumed it was dead) and I removed the affected part. The other side was fine. Now, with this new leather, it looks like the same thing, but I'm afraid to dip it. My parameters were good, except the pH was low- added superbuffer 9-19-08:
    9-6-08 50% water change
    9-7-08 Parameters: Salinity 1.024, pH 8.0, ALK 14.4 dKH, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10
9-7-08 added (drip acclimated x 2 hr) Frogspawn and toadstool
9-18-08 Temp 78, Salinity 1.026, ALK 10.9 dKH (stopped adding reef Calcium and Buffer on 9-7-08), pH 7.8, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10

You shouldn't freshwater dip an LPS, saltwater dip them with some Lugol's (about 15-20 drops) for about 15 minutes. As for the leather, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Everything looks ok, but what about Mag and Cal levels? What kind of lights do you have? Luna

I don't test for either- I guess that's the next priority. Lights are 48" coralife pro- 2 MH, 2 CF- just changed the bulbs.

Your salinity is a little high, but that shouldn't cause your corals to die. These corals were completely healthy looking when you purchased them? The green leather was fully open when you bought it and didn't any of that brown rot to it? Did you buy them from the same store?

Its very strange for a green tree leather to go so quickly from one day to the next, usually it takes at least 2-3 days. Have you checked you ph at night to see if maybe you are getting some big swings or something? Do you have any other corals in your tank right now that are doing well? How long has your tank been setup? How long is your photoperiod?

I doubt that your new mh's could be putting out uv. Very strange. Until you figure it out I wouldn't add anything else or add a small frag of something tough like zoos that will help you tell whats going on by opening or closing..

Reef goddess- unfortunately, it melted. I've posted another thread in water chemistry, and so far have not lost anything else. After the finger melted, my colt coral (about a year old) wilted down and turned grey, but for the last 3 days has come back to life. I've done a water change, and watched my parameters very closely (see the water cehmistry thread). I did take the frag the finger was on and some tank water back to the LFS, the best they could tell me was it was a bacteria (from their tank or mine, they didn't say!). I was afraid I would lose everything else in the tank, but so far, so good. Actually, my zoa's have opened up for the first time since I got them 6 weeks ago. I'm a little nervous about adding another coral, being a newbie to all this, but I've read that leathers are pretty tough, so maybe I'll try again!

sorry I'm late on this one. how high upon the rocks did you have it? I know it melted o this point is moot. but maybe it'll help you for the next finger

I would wait until your zoos start doing well before adding another leather. It is very possible that you may have gotten a bacterial infection from your LFS, esp if your frogspawn/hammer died around the same time.
Leathers are hardy but they release a lot of nutrients in the water when they die, so its best to hold off until your tank is stabilized. I would just stick with buying zoos and mushrooms, etc for the time being. These are least likely to melt and add to the crash potential of your tank. If possible, try getting corals from a different lfs in the future to see if they do better.
