I am ready to jump in and purchase my 300 gallon. What are the benifits of acrylic over glass?

Is one harder to clean than the other?

I was looking into a glass 300 with starfire glass. I havent found a good acrylic company in Dallas yet.

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks, Pjracer

Acrylic over all is better but, it is harder to clean in my opinion. This is because acrylic scratches very easily makking the normal algea clean a pain in the @$$. I have owned both, and I am personally in the process of getting a new tank and decided to go back to a glass one because of what I just stated.

Acrylic is bulletproof, and lighter, and clearer, but nearly impossible to clean without eventually scratching. If your supper careful and patient it can be okay, but even then people usually manage to scratch it. It can be fixed, but if the scratch is inside (i.e. think Coraline algae), you'd need to drain it to fix the scratch. Definitely not for me, although, if they were more scratch resistant, they would be very appealing. In reality though, I don't think I've ever seen one more than a few years old that wasn't all scratched up.

I have had a chance to read some other reviews too. I think im going with a glass tank. I am considering class gages.com or our local Dallas glass tank company.

your thinking of bulletproof glass, which is polycarbonate, thermoplastic and glass all sandwiched together.

    I wouldn't recommend shooting a acrylic tank.

LOL, sorry, I wasn't using the term literally. Just trying to highlight that it's really tough.

I concur with the others. The advantage of acrylic is that it can be shaped easier than glass, lighter and by nature clearer. HOWEVER it is more prone to scratches. So much so that if a ring were to run across it, it could put a small scratch in it.

Also, I believe (don't quote me) that in larger sizes the glass has to be thicker than acrylic to sustain the same amount of force being applied to it.

Yes, acrylic is very clear and strong, but I've never seen an acrylic tank that wasn't scratched to hell.

I bought my tank from Glasscages and am pretty pleased with it. Just be sure to inspect it thoroughly before accepting it and be sure to read their warranty info because warranty is void if not placed on one of their stands. I have heard that their tanks can be hit or miss and I have heard of people complaining about them(leaking, breaking, crappy silicone etc.) But also don't know of the circumstances and can't always completely blame the manufacturer.

as stated above, the drawback with acrylic is it gets scratch pretty easily.
