I don't know what the pump is, I can try to check later. There is a filter. It's not just for the fish, but also helps keep the water clear and nice looking. It takes out leaves, needles, etc. The pond is hooked up to a water line, so I don't have to worry about evaporation.

I'm not really sure what to tell you about yours since it is missing so many parts and everything...I had mine custom built so everything just went in at the same time.

I think you guys inspired me to maybe clean out the thing this weekend and try to finish the rock work.

Any one know besides cement, is there a clay like mix that hardens and can hold rocks in place that weigh a few pounds ?

Kcbrad has the right idea, get some cheap Comets. Wait until your new house chore list shrinks a bit and you feel like it isn’t a project but a fun toy to tinker with. With some free time and elbow grease you could have something pretty fun to look at. Congrats on the house.

Anything can happen to the fish, which is why I go the cheap goldfish route. Weather, predators, etc. I've had fish taken by owls, herons, hawks, raccoons, bull frogs.....

At first I wanted koi, but I was told my pond is too small (about 400-500 gallons). They are super messy and get huge.

That is plenty big for Koi, and all the other fish I mentioned. I have 2 ponds and the smallest of the two isn't much bigger that that one and I Have 4 Koi an 4 Comets and a dozen or so bug eaters in it with a few plants and a small pump and filter.

All you need to put that ledge back to together is some mortar and rocks. And it isn't that much work and contrary what some people think is easy to take care of. I cleaned mine out in the spring and have done nothing but put the hose in and top it off once in a while and toss some food in there morning and night. I clean out the filter once a month or when the flow slows down to a trickle.

Haha that sounds funny. Sounds like you live in a wild life preserve :)

I think I will go the goldfish route as well, and few masquito eating fish.

Do you guys just add regular tap water with out treating it for chlorine ?

Thanks every one for advice, not going to fill it will dirt any more.

Haha I practically do! When I moved in we had a resident cougar. We've had a few black bear sightings this summer, I bet they would go fishing too! Thankfully I haven't caught one of them out there yet.

My pond just uses water from my water lines, so it isn't treated or anything. Which now that I think about it seems weird....lol But I've had the same fish (minus some due to other animals fishing) for a couple years now and they are big and healthy.

You should do a build thread for your pond! I wanna follow along!

I didn't know about mosquito eating fish. I think I'll look into those. We have horrible mosquitoes. If you don't do a waterfall, though I think you should!, try to make sure the water isn't too stagnant, or you will have trouble with mosquitoes breeding there.

Another idea is to install lighting around the pond. It looks awesome at night! I just did that this year, and it's really cool. If you already have electricity going out there (Which you should, for the pump) you can buy some fairly cheap lights and do it yourself.

Here's a picture of mine (maybe you can find some inspiration from it):

Yep I use it straight out of the tap. There is about 200 gallons and I am usually only adding
20 or 25 so I figure it's not to bad. I have had some of my Butterfly Koi for almost 8 years now
so I figure we must be doing some thing right.

Here is a picture of the big pond earlier this spring.

a flower pot cant give you the peaceful sound of trickeling water. if you keep the right plants in the pond, you'll never have to put more than 2hours of work in A YEAR
