I recently took all the live rock out of my sump, in a battle against nitrates. Long story short, I have a 5 gallon bucket full of some really nice live rock that I don't know what to do with. It's submersed at the moment, and when I shine my flashlight into the bucket I see all kinds of pods and whatnot. Right now in California the weather is nice and the bucket doesn't seem to get too cold at night, but eventually conditions won't be good anymore and it just seems wrong to let this live rock and all of its inhabitants go to waste.

What would you do with this stuff? If there was some way to keep it all in case I upgrade my DT that would be ideal.

    Thanks as always. -D

You could sell it on Craigs List(I've seen it done before) or sell it on our For Sale board...or maybe see if you can get some credit for it at your LFS?

I've kept rock in a storage bin with a PH and a heater thrown in there for a week. Longer than that and I'd imagine you'd have to do water changes to keep things ok. I think it was essentially like a black out in an 18gal tank, hermits and emeralds lived with it. Didn't need filters b/c no fish, no real debris.

I agree with anb, just use WC water for WC for the LR container.

You could always dry it out and use again as base rock for your next upgrade.

what i've done with mine if not selling it is trading it for store credit at my lfs for the going price of their dry rock per pound. if you have a lfs that you frequent i would imagine they'd help you out some, they still make money off of the trade.

My lfs is really strict about what they put in their system, so I don't imagine they would take it. Plus I kinda wanna keep it anyway. I like the idea about using WC water to refresh the live rock. Thanks to all!

I bought mine off CL. It's really nice. Anyways, I think it would be worth it to take care of it if it's that alive until you need it.

I would think if you kept the water moving and a good temp it would last even longer.

I've done this for years. Why sell it for pennies on the dollar when you know you'll use it again?
