I just realized my test kit is way out dated. so I am curious what do you all consider to be the best kit out there? is there one that is all inclusive, or do I need to buy some separate tests.

I've had good luck with my API test kits... They seem to hit it on the head, same readings as my LFS, who uses another chemical drop test kit... Not api, never thought of asking though.

API is the most affordable, and generally pretty accurate. Saliferts are usually the best, but most expensive, along with Tropic Marin.

Elos are arguably the best test kits out there, but they are also expensive. I have used API Reef Master Test Kit and Salt Water Master Test Kit with good results. I have used Salifert Mg test kits and really like them. I have recently just bought a Salifert Phosphate test kit b/c the API wasn't as accurate or precise and like it too. It's easy to use and more accurate then the API kit. I also just bought a Ca Salifert kit.

As for necessary test kits, you initially need an Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite and PH kit. If your doing a reef you also need a Magnesium, Calcium and Alk test kits. I also like to test for phosphates.

I use Elos for Ca, Salifert for Mg, API for Alk, NH3 and NO3. Pretty solid.

i would recommend starting with the API kits (saltwater and reef) plus a Mg test. Simply because it's a nice all inclusive package more or less.

then i would replace them with "better" kits as they need refilled.

personally, i found red sea Mg test to be a PITA but the Salifert one is super easy. Worth the extra few bucks in my book.

I have both API and Salifert

I prefer salifert, eventhough its more expensive. I like their testing method.

I think salifert should be used for mg, ca, and alk. Yea a little costly. Easiest to use. accurate and do lat a long time. Each test kit last a about a year or more for salifert.
