I have a 90G corner flow drilled aqaurium, it states that it has a 700GPH max flow rate.

What size return pump (GPH) should I purchase to avoid floods?

Does anyone recommend a good brand submersable pump to place in sump?

    Thanks reefers!

The rating only specifies the maximum flow. Only proper plumbing can prevent floods, not the pump size or actual return flow rate (as long as you don't exceed 700gph).

Some use 3x - 5x the DT size for return flow rate (270 - 450gph for your tank), others go with 10x the sump size (i.e. 30g sump=300gph return).

Eheim is one of your best pumps. I hear nothing but good about them.

I went with the 5x the DT size for GPH and I've been extremely happy with the way my Fuge has worked out. Faster is not always better, and when you think about it filtering your tank 5 times per hour is very good. I live in florida, and I've never heard of anything living directly "In" the Gulf Stream except for sport fish. Everything else concerning reef life lives in the Reef where it's somewhat calmer. (somewhat)

As for Eheim, I can't speak for the product, but if Mr Bill says it's good, I'd believe him. He's what you would call a resident expert around here.
Best of luck with the new tank. And dont forget to post pics as soon as you can for us all.........

We would need to know the height difference between your pump and tank.

Usually that is ~4 ft. If you use a Mag Drive 7, that would give about 480 gph. A Mag Drive 5 would pump about 310 gph. Either one of those would work. Both are reliable pumps. My Mag Drive 9.5 is almost silent too :)
