if there is a definitive answer to this question

    please share it with me

    I focus on the basics
water quality, lighting, filtration - and spending plenty of money on a regular basis

We talk how are tanks is an enclosed ecosystem, but my personal opinion is this world we created enclosed in glass is no different than the planet we live on, our planet is also enclosed, outside our enclosure we could not survive without having certain things provided for us or made by unnatural means.
Even in their natural world things are not always consistent, in most cases nature provides the means for the natural world to correct things that gone wrong. Today our natural world needs help, severe changes in weather patterns, pollution, major consumption of natural recourses all contribute to a lot of changes that the world’s reefs are experiencing and making it harder for nature to fix.
Our tanks are no different, if we provide natural means for our little world in a glass to correct itself when something goes bad it will.
In time and this is a sad thing, the direction we are headed, one day the natural reefs in the world will find itself in the same mess as our tanks gets sometimes, but there will be no one there that can do a water change, no one that can add a chiller to the great Barrier Reef, add a Protein Skimmer to the Caribbean.
In time like our tanks, the worlds Reefs will crash, our tanks and the worlds reefs are one in the same, just a huge gigantic difference in size, eehhh! What was the question again?

Good points, I can see where your headed and can agree to some extent. Due to the size and diversity though nature has a much better way of correcting things than we do in our glass boxes with a WC.
The original question was what makes a healthy reef but was just meant to start a discussion. There are so many ways to do things but I believe we all have the same goal in the end, to provide the best care we possibly can to our glass box and its inhabitants.
