    Colt coral perhaps ? , the "image" is blurry though

    Ascidian are colonies of small very colourfull filter feeders. They are also spongy as you say this piece is. The enlarged photo is fuzzy but the thumbnail photos colour & whatever detail i could make out, i would go with Ascidian's. Here is a site you should see if you are interested
