Hi guys sorry for so many questions. I set up my tank with my live rock and sand. i have it running i was wondering when i should test the nitrates, ammoneia and the other one that starts with a p. I was wondering alot of people on the forum are talking about a shrimp in the tank while it is cycling.

it helps build up beneficial bacteria and start the cycle, but it just is used to produce waste. you could also put in some fish food but live rock is the best method of starting a cycle so you roff to a good start.

By the way, it's a raw shrimp from the grocery store, not a live one. That's not made clear sometimes LOL.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Decaying organic matter creates ammonia, this in turn feeds what is known as nitrifying bacteria. These types of bacteria convert the ammonia to nitrite then to nitrates.

The process of metabolism creates ammonia in your system so you need the nitrifying bacteria to break it down into a less toxic substance.

    Simplified version.

You can do the same thing with a cap full of ammonia or bleach- seriously.

I do not believe in cycle speed up, yes it works, but it doesn't establish algae colonies in the right way IMHO.

But, you can wait, or, go the speedy route. I have been forced to learn patience over the years- my bugget, is after all, limited. not to mention- I realy despise any deaths in my reefs- make me feel like I some how failed.

    Consider this.

Why bleach please. I would think that if you just paid a high price for cured live rock adding bleach would be a determent to it.
