I would suggest a titanium heater with an external thermostat control. Several brands make this style. The one I use is made by finnex. I would recommend the analog dial temp control rather than the digital like I have. For some reason if the power goes out and comes back on it's default temp is 81 degrees. Having a manual dial to turn to a temp would not have this problem.

I've EASILY have purchased dozens upon dozens of heaters since 1970's

...I've been shocked, I've had thermostats stuck, heaters fail, and have had glass breaks and can attribute huge losses to bad heaters over the years...

++++8 on the over priced Hydors sucking (I've bought 2 and 2 have failed!!!)

+20 on EBJ's ...they go back to the 70's and are hands downs the best heaters (I've had 1 actually fail, the rest I've broken)

Bumping up this thread. I need a new heater, and there are good and bad reviews for all of the brands, including Jager and Finnex. I've got a 90 gallon tank w/ 35 gal sump. Best heater recommendations please.

Finnex titanium with the controller and separate temp probe. The only problem like mentioned before is the digital version resets to 81 if the power goes out. other than that I loved mine.

I have a ViaAqua Titanium and a Jager, both no complaints so far.
The Jagers are BIG though, so be advised.

I went ahead and got the Jager, even though it's huge. I live in an old crappy house, and my breakers get tripped fairly frequently. (add massive amounts of electrical equipment to salt and water with poor electrical and sharole calls this a hobby) ha ha. Anyway, I wouldn't want to have to remember to reset the temp control on the finnex every time, I guarantee I would cook the tank at least once.

I'll just have to find a spot to fit the Jager. 20 inches is pretty big, maybe in the middle section of my sump. Thanks!

I'm also interested in best heaters with no price cap. If there is something amazing out there, I want to know about it because I do love to upgrade! Pretty sure my husband cringes every time I use that word. ;D

the best heater is one attached to a controller like the Apex Jr. A great controller that is a cheap way to make sure your heater never kills your tank. Brand of heaters I like best are Jagers def.

I have quite a few Jagers that have been running without issues for over a year. Not a long enough time I realize, but so far so good.
