    I remember when I was a little kid, I learned how to read by going to the library and bringing home a stack of books, family vacations were planned by looking at an atlas, and I actually called my friends from a corded land line phone. Now, my 14 year old brother has an iPhone, my parents are too reliant on their garmin and cell phone GPS to even bother with an atlas (even when their batteries die), and how many kids do you see reading a book these days. Whatever happened to the days of writing a paper from looking things up in an encyclopedia? I know when I get to the point where I have kids they won't have a cell phone until they can drive and they will at least know how to plan a trip by looking at an atlas and not just plugging it into a gps. Well that's just my 2cents for the night, I saw a tv show that really brought this up.

    LOL I can remember the rotary dial phones!

    My teens all have had cell phones, ipods, etc. etc. but not until they had a J O B and paid their portion of the bill. But sadly yes the days of old are gone. Growing up all I had to look at on long drives was the scenery or the insides of my eyelids. My kids would "die" if the dvd player in the van quit working.

    That's the case for some, like the kid who lives next door to me. lol. ...gets everything handed to him.

    I am a teen. I have a nice phone, but not until I turned 16 did I get it. I use maps still. :) I think iPhones are just a waste of money. My dad's all up with the technology stuff, but for education, & not 'just to have it'.

    Ugh, I hate TV/DVD players in cars.:-/

    Jeez dude, people usually say that about our generation, not us saying it about my brother's lol. TBH, it might just be a timing difference between NJ and MO, since this area tends to have wider adoption of more tech faster.

    TBH, I haven't used an encyclopedia for a research paper since fourth grade. It's a horrible source that should never actually be cited. The majority of what I look up have been journal articles, research papers, etc., just in electronic format. It's much easier than finding the same paper in a massive set of books in a massive library.

    I can understand making kids learn the basics before they learn the advanced stuff, but IMO, it's much more important to instill a desire to learn. If your kids have the will to learn, they'll do it, regardless as to the format. They'll figure out how to use a map if they need to, rather than just complain that the cell and GPS are dead.

    Me too! But when the wife says it's gotta be...it's gotta be. They recently discovered that the sound can be routed through the stereo so now I don't even get music without a ton of drama. LOL

    To be honest, people who I meet are dumber than a sack of potatoes. Asking stupid questions which are obvious. I'm just a honor student taking college prep classes where everybody points out your mistake and criticize you a lot. I look down on regular kids, learning a future that doesn't exist.
    Technology=Dumbing down everything.
    Our English language=dumb down like lol, rofl, etc.

    Uhhhh.... sorry.... excuse me.... are you really 21??? When you grew up.... you had video games, internet, computers, and cell phones.

    When I grew up an encyclopidia was the only source of info and I had to go to the library for that. I watched 3 channels that turned off at midnight. I had one phone in the house and it was a special day when my sister and I got an extension. The national sensation was "Pong" and only a couple of friends had that.

    And before that my parents never saw color TV, the only way to communicate long distance was by telegraph and not everyone had a phone but at least they had cars....

    And their Grand parents had to get up in the middle of the night to go take a leak out side, and communication was by way of horse and light was made by fire, the horse was the main way of transportation....

    And before that long distance communication was by way of smoke and you ate, pooped and lived in the same cave, but at least it was lit by fire.

    It's been going on for a while.
