just get some good quality live rock, if its hard for you to afford it then petstores usually sell tufa or dry rock for really cheap like 1-2 dollars a pound. dont put clay pots or any other thing in there it may mess up the chemistry

You can usually find some good and cheap base rock too right, aslong as you have some live rock in there as well,

technically you wouldnt have to start a tank with live rock, or every add a piece of live rock. but this means you would have to cycle the tank with a damsel or a piece of shrimp. once the dry rock gets encrusted with algae and coral you cant even tell the diference. but live rock just quickens the result thats why its expensive.

Nothing but DRY base rock and maybe a few shells. With base rock not only is it cheaper it will not contain any of the unwanted hitchhikers.
After a few months in the tank you will not be able to tell the difference between it and live rock.

Tufa rock can be used but some of it contains silica which can leach into your water and create an algae problem in the future.

this is true, make sure you get quality dry rock, and some companies even make dry rock that you can buy and you can specify shape and size and what not. also some lfs' sell very dense and heavy base rock that displaces alot of water, you want to buy light porous dry rock

Are you still asking what you should set the rock ON or are you asking about other stuff to put in there besides rock?
