What does "nuke it" mean w/regard to LR?

I was reading on another forum here at 3reef and saw that aptasia is a bad thing. Some recommended "nuking" the LR. Could someone specify what is meant by "nuking" the Live rock to get rid of it?

nuking means bleaching it for awhile or hot hot hot water.depends which ever one you want to do.but some people like it some dont.depends who you talk to.and everyne nukes differently too.its dangerou because you have to make sure all the bleach is totally gone and off the rock and it takes awhile for it to be gone.

 

Some people use a blow torch, by "nuking" live rock you're basically killing anything and everything on it, good and bad. The end result is base rock, which will eventually come back to life when added to the aquarium. When I nuked my old live rock I soaked it in 50/50 bleach/water solution for a few days, then I soaked it in baking soda/water solution for 3-4days. iir it's a pound of baking soda per 10gal of water? Can't remember exactly though. Then I soaked the rock in a new baking soda/water solution for another 3-4 days. And finally i soaked the rock in pure water for about a week, then I let it dry out. This process can be repeated if needed, but my rock turned very white and all the bad disappeared. It worked for me, there are many was of doing it though, best of luck to you with whatever method you chose!

 

Nuking live rock = killing any form of living creature

Nuking Apstesia = Killing apstesia

Its just an expretion of killing stuff

If you dont want to kill off your live rock you can just kill the apstesia with Leathal injection ( using a siringe)
This includes many different ways Ive heard of the following- boiling water, leamon juice, joes juice and kalkwasser.
im sure theres more, some people will try with pepermint shimp.
the shrimp is a hit and miss thing some eat em some dont.

 

If you want to kill the rock altogether this is the method I used (very similar to above). I heard it from very good reefers and it worked great for me, the rock is in my tank and doing fine!!

50/50 bleach water soak for 3 days
Freshwater soak for 3 days
2 lbs. baking soda/enough RO water to cover the rock. Can't really use too much soda but I use 1 lb. for a 5 gallon bucket of rock or less and 2 lbs. for any more than a bucket full.
Let it sit and dry out for 3 weeks min., or until completely dry.

Just my 2 pennies it has worked great for me and other people with no ill effects, everything on rock guaranteed to be dead... this would be a sure fire way to kill anything on a rock.

As for killing specific things on rock... dunno! See what everyone else says!
