Im searching for a post AzDesertRat made relating to the differences between distilled water and RO/DI. the conclusion was your better off using the RO/DI.
I'll post the link as soon as I find it.

It will work but the kilowatt hours of electricity it consumes to make that 12 gallons of distilled water per day is tremendous. That 1500 watts of power continous for 24 hours, imagine if you left a hair dryer on for 24 hours, its extremely expensive.
I have posted the power costs per gallon produced somewhere but don't remember where, it may have been here though. Worth a search.

not sure how much power it works on but it would be just for top off water. i would get it from grandparents house and use it to tp off cuz i am constantly filling my 5g bucket at home cuz i only have a 10 gpd ro unit. i am trying to reduce nitrate right now so im doing as much water as i can but when i have to get about 1.5 gallon from ro unit in morning then 1.5 when i get home then about 1 g at about 9 oclock to have enough time to do water change lol its getting old so i was just wondering if i could use the water that it produces to do water changes until i get better ro unit. does the ro unit do a better job or are they comparable? would there be some bad stuff left in the innowave water?
    thanks

all that does is turn it into distilled water

I would get a ro/di unit the filter guys have them for pretty cheap

Wow go figure, something else not for sale or use in Massachusetts.. This look VERY expensive & consider it will use electricity. Even more money. I'll stick to my RO/DI system...

RO/DI would be better. Stills require descaling and cleaning as the contaminants that get left behind build up, plus not all contaminants are removed, volatoles and organics can be concentrated with the steam and reconstituted in the treated water.
If your grandparents are footing the electric bills I suppose you could bum water from them But I'll bet they get tired of the power bills and cleaning required very quickly. I only go so far for my grandkids and that woould probably be over the line. Calculate 1500 watts x 24 hours at 8 to 10 cents a kwH and its pretty expensive for 12 gallons of water. That plus all the vinegar required for regular cleaning and the time involved, I think I'd kill you if you were my grandkid! Just kidding but I think you get the picture. They are designed for a gallon or so of water a day for drinking and thats about it. Even then 2 hours at 1500w for a gallon? A good RO/DI produces 3-4 gallons per hour with no power consumption.

    OUCH!!!!!!!!

The innowave® 360 drinking water system takes ordinary tap water to the extraordinary new level of clean. This compact unit combines distillation, the most effective method for reducing virually all contaminants, with carbon filtration to produce high quality drinking water. You can rest assured that water which has been distilled and carbon filtered will exceed all US EPA National Drinking Water Standards. $2,495.00
