The refugium is used to eat nitrates and phosphates and make our job easier. I have a 6" deep sand bed with 2 pieces of live rock and a ball of cheato. This is simply all you need. You don't have to worry about the sand being stirred it's really not necessary and quite frankly it's not good to stir up a DSB. If you want to hide the fuge from sight you can squeegie on a black or blue background on the glass and viola! Done deal!

well it is a HOB so it has black on it already on the side facing the tank. im just afraid that with all the detritus build up it will cause the nitrates to raise

im just getting so many different perspectives. some people say i need to remove the detritus so it wont cause high nitrates others say just leave it

Poo is poo. It's going some where. The point is to have it break down in the fuge, and then the algae sucks up the nutrients/nitrates and grows. When you remove algae, you are removing those nutrients from the system.

And yes, I too find it confusing to read all the cotrasting opinions in this hobby.

Seems to me sand stirring critters are not a big deal from what I read. Don't forget, the bed will eventually be populated with all kinds of worms. Those do a lot.

I would not add any critters into the fuge...you will have all kinds of fun little worms, pods etc. to feed off of the detritus. I throw my turbo snail down into my fuge for 2-3 days once in a while to help keep it a little cleaner!! Seems to work pretty well.
