What are the pro's and con's to wet skimming vs. dry skimming? I have a no name skimmer that I did some mod's to. I shortened the neck from the main cylinder to the collection cup and also added a wood air diffuser. now the entire cylinder is so full of micro bubbles that I get very high amounts of tea colored skimmate. I had adjusted it as best I can. is it going to be a problem wet skimming?

Once you skim out the DOC's that are causing the tea colored stuff it will become more concentrated and a drier foam or maybe cut back on the air pump a little you want to get a good foam right to the bottom of the collection cups throat. then just lest it run . Did the skimmer have a water level mark on it ? Oh its a no mane :) you will have to dial it in by cutting back on the water level entering the skimmer or the bubbles its its a simple HOD like a Saunders or Lee's and has the air stone at the base of the riser column in the tank ? But either less water through skimmer or less air volume will dry it up you want to skim as dry as possible as a rule .

this skimmer has a rio pump with a separate air line. the water and air are forced into the side of the main cylinder. the problem I was having was...no matter how much or little air flow I allowed it would never collect any skimmate. so I did some mods to it. now it is on Wow...lol so I will give it some time to settle down. if it doesnt I will have to try a smaller air pump. So dry is the best and the ideal foam level would be right to the base of the collection cup...am I right? I will try to take a pic of it tonight when home from work so you can see what I am talking about.

dry smells worse and wet needs more make up water. I would worry more about how much crap is pulled out rather than one or two ounces of water that may be going with it
