just get some RO/DI water. cut the algae at the source i.e. the nutrients. so that will help A LOT.

watch your parameters. best advice is to always cut the nutrient source dont try to bandaid it. jmo

With an 8 gallon tank, you could easily get a 5 gallon jug and buy RO water from the grocery store and have it last 2 months. Do not use tap, that is most likely fueling your algae.

That algae is going to take a while to starve out. considering your cycling again, I would scrub the rocks some more to get rid of most of the gha, or even bleach them and start out with them as base rock. You can get a scoop of sand from a friend to seed your tank to make them live again.

I would take your clown to the fish store if you don't have another tank setup to house him. Cycling with a fish a slightly cruel.

Thanks for the replies! I will take the advice, and cycle it for longer, and take a photo!

My tank is just finishing it's cycle and I ran my lights on a "normal" day/night rotation. Brown algae is actually diatoms (link) and is part of the cycle.

I agree that you may want to start over as other have suggested. I would definitely suggest using only RO/DI water for your tank. Dealing with headaches from algae from using normal tap water will make you wish you had used RO/DI from the begining. Using a high quality salt with no NO3, phosphates etc like Tropic Marin or similar good quality salt should really help too.
