It's like an illness(not really)...not having a skimmer may not be the direct the cause, but it certainly could have contributed to their growth.. :p

Well, I would recommend washing the skimmer with fresh water/white vinegar mix, rinse with freshwater, & wiping it dry. This will remove the oil from the plastic on the skimmer when it was mfg & will cut the breakin period. Your skimmer will take a few days to start to skimming. Without washing it, 4-6 days. You will still need to dial it in a few times during it's breakin process.

Great advice! I didn't know about the vinegar bath when I bought my skimmer and it took quite a bit to break in. Later, when cleaning it for maintenance with a mix of water and muriatic acid (I got too impatient for the vinegar to work.... although it does, the acid does it in a fraction of the time, just make sure u re-lube the O-rings), I am sure I removed all possible film, and within hours of placing it back in the tank it was skimming like a champ. This is very often overlooked, so I'm glad u brought it up, John.

hydroids are still growing, my +50head zoa colony is not opening, probably dying. I see them starting to grow through out the tank, including the walls. Suggestions?

I have tunze 9002 running for 2 weeks now, and been feeding once in 2 days

Hydroids are related to jellyfish and if I'm not mistaken at some point the heads will pop off and probably sit on the glass. The only ways to get rid of them that I've seen is to starve them out (which is what the skimmer suggestion was for) or manually removing them.

I've heard these can be seriously hard to get rid of and I've heard of people having take there rock out of the tank and scrubbing them off.

Hopefully someone here has a better suggestion .
