How many of you use a wave maker? I have a 125 6ft long reef and will be setting up a 75 with rock two clowns and one anome was thinking of taknig two hydor 1400's out of the 125 and putting in controllable ones in with a wave maker. Does it help enough to justify the cost.

I have a controller that has a wavemaker control and I think it has helped my tank since my random flow now has random volume flow also.

Not being rude I understand they work and right now my 125 has 50 times water turn over just was trying to justify if it is a worth while upgrade. Thanks in advance.

I think it is because you can get very random flow using them, more so, IMO, than just by running a PH 24/7.

You can create turbulent flow by pointing powerheads at each other and such. This can be fine in most cases. Especially if you move them a bit manually every few days or so. So, worth it is a matter of opinion. Your corals arn't going to grow 10x faster or anything. It can help keep detritus from settling. This is very important and can have a big impact. Of course there are ways to deal with detritus without a wavemaker. I do have an MP40 and like it. For me I think it was worth it, I can't say if it would be worth it for you. It's sort of like asking is a bigger computer monitor is worth it. maybe... what do you have and what are your goals?

So what is it you want to get out of it? Do you want to make waves or do you want random controllable flow? Very few people make waves. Controllable powerheads give you more options than just on/off powerheads.

Thanks to all I guess what my ? was I will need to buy new power heads for the 75 gallon and could move the heads I have in the 125 to it. But I am liking what I have and no one has told me there is some awesome advantage to the controllable so I will wait to get the tank and go from there Thanks to all.

Flow is very different in every tank. You really want to eliminate dead spots. Turn over rate does not mean a whole lot, but it is all we have.

So what you need in your tank is hard to say... but do not underestimate flow. There are those that believe it to be much more important than lighting. So good flow is a great thing. Only you can say if the controllers are worth it to you in your tank.

What I will say is that to me in my tank my Vortechs were worth every penny and I will get them again.
