well im torn between drilling 9 more holes in my tank and going closed loop or going with an mp60w es and calling it a day.its a 225gallon tank.i do plan to keep anemones and sea hares(i know the risks and care involved very well).this is pushing me twards closed loop.plus the looks of the closed loop system.closed loop comes with its own risks/problems.structural integrity of the tank itself.clogging pump, power outages.i would need to add battery air pumps to the list if i go closed loop.

if i choose the mp60wes the tank has less holes to crack the glass, less chances to leak its also the cheapest of the option. my big worry is my sea hares or anemones walking into it.

    what would you do?

honestly I really like the idea of the closed loop, if i got it professionally done where I wouldn't have to worry about breaking the tank, I would do it.

If not I would just do the vortech, I think they have sponges you can put around it.

im not worried about the drilling of the tank.im worried with 12 holes in the tank it will crack under all the weight of the water.

well the higher you drill the less the pressure. Do you really need so many holes?

for a closed loop i do...2 drains 1 return for sum then 8 holes for an oceans motions valve.and 1 to feed the closed loop pump.

Do you already have an MP40 or the like?

Personally, I will probably use both types when I do my next build. I am thinking a couple of MP40s and an OM 4 way on a MantaRay pump.

I think closed loop is nice and flashy, I mean it is really really cool, but it's a waist of money in truth if you ask me. IMHO a CL is more stress and more money for less versatility. You can move around your lock line, but that still is not as versatile as being able to move the whole PH. I also like the ease of programing a vortech (not that I would really know seeing as I don't have one) compared to plumbing you system in a way to control flow. Clogging and battery back-up too? ya, CL is freaken cool, but no way I would have one.

You will be using more energy and adding more heat to the tank with CL than with circulation pumps. The cost of equipment will be less if you use Koralias plus you will have much more ability to adjust flow with the pumps than the CL. Plus piece of mind that the tank is not going to crack where the pumps are located.
