the last week or two i've noticed that the top of my water seems to resemble an oil spill. Can this be because i stick my hand in to feed every other day (sun polyp)? Or can it be that my basement tends to be dusty? I keep it open but i'm debating a glass lid since I don't have the room to build a canopy. any advice guys? where the one return and power head circulate the water looks fine but there is one end of the tank where it almost looks like the water stands still and from the bottom looking up looksl like there is a film or oil spill.

The oil spill look on the water's surface is usually a film of fish-oil and proteins. Do you run a skimmer?

I had the same problem a while ago. It didnt matter with or without the glass top. The oil disappeared when I got a skimmer and pointed the powerheads slightly towards the surface.

yes i have a skimmer...now that i think of it when I moved the skimmer to the other side of the tank this happened maybe its the position of my skimmer?

I've got one of my powerheads pointed up (just enough to disturb the surface) and towards the skimmer. It seemed to do the trick for me.

I with Erik...I would adjust your power head toward the surface, but point it to direct water toward the skimmer intake.

Yeah I point my power head towards the surface and in the direction towards my overflow box. I would get a claw to feed your corals or a large sleeve glove...its a lot easier..not to mention there's something not right about sticking your hand in a tank with all types of bacteria and fish waste...:)
