    Hey guys,

I currently use tap water, which is making a mess of my tank due to the phosphates and nitrates doing wonders for algae (especially cyano) growth.

I dont really have the money yet or space for an RODI filter, but I was wondering as I work for a University in Australia, doing medical research, could I use the DI water they use there?

As far as I know, its RODI, with 0 TDS and even has no nucleases or proteases, which makes it medical grade.

Would this water be to good for my 55g reef? I am using redsea coral pro salt to give the water the basic nutrients for coral growth.

Let me know what you think, as this water is also free for me, and then I dont have to buy an RODI filter :p.

    Thanks guys.

As far as I know the moment the DI water comes in contact with salt, salt water, metal, some plastics, or anything it can bond with it will. So I don't see an issue with using it. I'm not sure how severe medical grade DI is when it comes to re-ionizing, but if it's like the DI I use from my dads shop you shouldn't have any issues.

They build wet stations for the semiconductor industry. So you KNOW clean and pure is important.

FWIW, lab-grade DI is used to mix SW for marine lab studies. Just make sure you transport/store it in lab or food-grade containers; it can absorb phosphates from cheap plastics.

Yes, that would be a good choice in your case.
